/ Sustainable Agro-Food Chains

Composition

The Sustainable Agro-food Chains(SAC) group is a multidisciplinary team, with 39 full members, 15 PhD collaborators and 25 Non-PhD collaborators. Areas of expertise range from fundamental sciences such as biology and chemistry to agronomy, forestry engineering and ecology. The group benefits from the input of other scientific experts in the fields of mathematics, physics, technological engineering and engineers.

AgroBioPlant - Research Group of Applied Plant Biology and Agri Food Innovation (CITAB - UMinho Pole)

The SAC group has also on its composition the AgroBioPlant, the CITAB's Pole at the University of Minho, which performs research on Vegetal Biology and Food Innovation.

General objectives

The main goal of SAC is the development of effective and pragmatic strategies to optimize sustainable food production

Research

SAC research is organized into two related projects:

Agronomy, climate change & environmental studies (ACES)

This project will develop suitable adaptation and mitigation measures to environmental and climate changes in the agricultural sector, based on plant studies and numerical atmospheric modelling, which includes environmental impacts on Mediterranean agricultural production chains and the design and improvement of cropping practices.

MAJOR SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES:

  • Climate variability and environmental impacts
  • Biodiversity as a potential resource for sustainable development; selection, characterization and conservation of plant resources
  • Environmental stresses. Improvement of cropping practices and mitigation measures
  • Nutrient cycles, processing and reuse of animal and agro-food residues

Plant products & co-products (3P's)

This project will provide pragmatic, effective and sustainable solutions for "greening the food chain" and optimizing human and animal health. Emphasis is given to Mediterranean crops, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP), and other economically-important plants.
