The scientific activity focuses particularly on agrometeorology, crop water management, and the ways in which climate variability and climate change influence crop growth and development, especially in grapevines. With an academic background that includes a five-year bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from UTAD, and a PhD in Agronomic Sciences from Cranfield University (UK), this training has consolidated a multidisciplinary foundation oriented toward understanding interactions within the soil–plant–water–atmosphere continuum. The work developed has deepened knowledge on aspects such as microclimate, soil water dynamics, evapotranspiration, productivity and water-use efficiency, particularly in the Douro Demarcated Region. Participation in numerous national and international projects, as well as the conception and leadership of scientific initiatives, has advanced research on pedoclimatic and physiological monitoring, viticultural zoning, the climatic requirements of crops, optimisation of deficit irrigation, and the development of mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change. The research integrates field experimentation, instrumentation and sensors, precision agriculture methodologies and modelling, generating knowledge that supports innovation and informed decision-making in the agricultural sector. Over a career spanning more than 30 years, it has also involved teaching responsibilities, academic management and advanced training.
As a member of CITAB since 2008, the work is carried out in multidisciplinary teams that bring together researchers, companies, associations and other public and private entities, particularly those linked to the wine industry, promoting knowledge exchange and strengthening the connection between research and practical application. This collaboration has driven initiatives that enhance regional competitiveness, the efficient management of agricultural ecosystems and the adaptation of the primary sector to emerging challenges.
