The project LIFE FAGESOS - Phytophthora-induced decline of fagaceae ecosystems in Southern Europe exacerbated by climate change: preserving ecosystem services through improved integrated pest management was approved and will be coordinated by José Gomes Laranjo, researcher at CITAB. The work team also includes the CITAB researchers Fernando Raimundo, Guilhermina Marques and Luís Martins. The treatment of chestnut and oak areas affected by ink disease in regions of Portugal, Italy and Spain, implementing an extensive treatment protocol that combines curative and prophylactic measures, is the main objective of the project. In national territory, "LIFE FAGESOS" will allow the treatment of about 250 hectares of chestnut trees affected by the ink disease, in Trancoso. The consortium includes 13 partners, 8 Italians, 4 spaniards and CITAB-UTAD, the only portuguese representative. With a duration of 60 months, this project guarantees €303,099.34 for UTAD and also a PhD Scholarship. The LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. LIFE Programme contributes to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and laws by co-financing projects with a high European added value.
