BIOsCherry: Inovação e Sustentabilidade na Produção de Cereja com Bioestimulantes Naturais
Portugal produces around 20,000 tonnes of cherries per year, with
Fundão, Resende and Penajóia standing out as the main production areas. Fundão
leads with approximately 17,000 tonnes annually, while Penajóia is
distinguished by producing the earliest cherries of the season. This project
aims to add value to cherry production through the development and application
of natural biostimulants (BIOs), promoting sustainability, productivity and
fruit quality. The work plan is organised into several interlinked tasks,
ranging from the development of new biostimulants using scalable and
environmentally friendly production processes to the evaluation of cherry
quality and bioactivity.
The project has strong potential to drive the sustainable development of
producing regions by valorising natural resources, attracting qualified
populations, promoting the transfer of scientific knowledge, generating wealth
across multiple sectors, and stimulating tourism in inland areas of the
country.
